# Home vs. in-lab sleep study cost calculator

A home sleep apnea test usually costs far less out of pocket than an in-lab polysomnogram. Enter the two prices and your plan's deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket limit to see what each study would cost you, before you call a sleep clinic.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://sleepstudies.fyi/tools/home-vs-lab-sleep-study-cost-calculator). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Choose how will you pay?.
2. Enter home sleep apnea test price (cpt 95806).
3. Enter in-lab polysomnogram price (cpt 95810).
4. Enter deductible left to meet this year.
5. Enter your coinsurance after the deductible.
6. Enter out-of-pocket maximum left this year.
7. Read the result.

## How it works

Cash pay: your cost is the price you enter for each study. Ask a sleep clinic for its self-pay price for CPT 95806 (or HCPCS G0399) and CPT 95810; many publish a cash price that is lower than the billed charge.

Insurance: you pay the allowed amount up to the deductible you have left, then your coinsurance share of the rest, capped at the out-of-pocket maximum you have left. Each study is figured on its own, as if it were the only claim this year.

The calculator does not add a separate physician interpretation fee, a sleep consult visit, copays or facility fees. Ask the clinic whether its price is global (technical and professional parts together).

Insurers often require a home test first for adults with suspected moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart, lung or neuromuscular disease, and approve an in-lab study only when a home test is not suitable or is negative. Your clinician decides which study you need.

> An estimate for planning, not a quote or medical advice. Your clinic and insurer set the real amounts; confirm the price and your coverage before you book a sleep study.

## Questions

### How much does a sleep study cost without insurance?

Cash prices vary widely. A home sleep apnea test is often a few hundred dollars, and an attended in-lab polysomnogram often costs one to several thousand dollars. Ask each clinic for its self-pay price and whether it includes the physician's reading.

### Why is a home sleep test cheaper?

A home test uses a small portable device in your own bed, with no lab room and no overnight technologist. An in-lab study records more signals, such as brain waves and leg movements, with a technologist watching all night.

### Will insurance pay for an in-lab study if I ask for one?

Not always. Many plans need prior authorization and approve an in-lab study only when a home test is not suitable, was negative or failed, or another sleep disorder is suspected. Call your insurer with the CPT code before you book.

### What is the difference between CPT 95810 and 95811?

CPT 95810 is a diagnostic in-lab polysomnogram. CPT 95811 adds CPAP titration, either as a separate night or as a split-night study, and usually costs more.
