Read a quote line by line

Check sleep test quotes, claims and follow-up. Lesson 1, 15 min.

A quote is a set of claims about a price. Read each line and decide what it tells you.

The lines to look for

  • Service and billing code. Does the code match the study on the clinician's order?
  • Setting. Is the study at an independent center, a hospital department or your home?
  • Parts. Does the price include the recording, the physician's reading and any facility fee?
  • Network. Are the place and the reading clinician in your plan's network?
  • Payment terms. What do you pay now and what is billed later? In which currency?
  • Dates. When was the quote made, and when does it end?
  • Extras. What happens if the study must be repeated? Is there a cancellation or no-show fee?

Cash price and plan price

A self-pay price is what a provider says it will charge a person who pays directly. It is not what your plan pays. If you have a plan, ask the plan too. Compare a self-pay price with the plan route only when both are in writing.

Mark unknowns

Make a table on paper. Use the same rows for every quote. Where a quote is silent, write unknown. Do not write a guess. Then ask the provider to fill each unknown. An unknown is a question, not a zero.

Check the code and the date

Billing codes can differ for similar studies. A quote for a different code is a quote for a different service. An old quote may not hold. Ask for the date.
